Trump Calls Out Marshawn Lynch For Sitting During US Anthem, Standing For Mexican Anthem
Donald Trump has now set his Twitter fingers on Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch after the NFL player stood during the Mexican national anthem but not for the United States national anthem during a recent football game.
"Marshawn Lynch of the NFL's Oakland Raiders stands for the Mexican Anthem and sits down to boos for our National Anthem," Trump tweeted Monday morning. "Great disrespect! Next time NFL should suspend him for remainder of season. Attendance and ratings way down."
The incident took place during a game against the Raiders and the New England Patriots at Estadio Azteca this past Sunday. However, according to a report from ESPN, Lynch actually stood during the first few bars of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before taking a seat. And although he stood for the Mexican anthem he was not completely at attention.
Since coming out of retirement this season Lynch has remained seated during the national anthem at NFL games, although it is unknown why he sits.
"I talked to Marshawn to make sure we're on the same page and he said, 'This is something I've done for 11 years. It's not a form of anything other than me being myself,'" Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio previously said. "I said, 'Just so you understand how I feel. I very strongly believe in standing for the national anthem, but I'm going to respect you as a man, you do your thing, OK, and we'll do ours. It's a non-issue for me."
