There's the NFL, and then there's the NBA.

In an era when the NFL wants to stay away from political statements as much as possible, the NBA is urging its players to be more conscious. NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the player union's executive director Michele Roberts have collaborated to send NBA players a letter encouraging their players to stay informed and be politically aware.

According to ESPN, who's seen the letter, posted Silver and Robert's statement, which read:

"None of us operates in a vacuum. Critical issues that affect our society also impact you directly. Fortunately, you are not only the world's greatest basketball players — you have real power to make a difference in the world, and we want you know that the Players Association and the League are always available to help you figure out the most meaningful way to make that difference."

NBA players are already some of the most politically active athletes. We've seen the sports' biggest stars from LeBron James to Kevin Durant to Stephen Curry to Dwyane Wade speak out in support of civil rights and criticize President Donald Trump when necessary. So, of course, NBA players didn't need this letter.

Still...it's nice to see, especially when you compare it to how the NFL operates.
