According to Bleacher Report, the league has announced that it’s abandoning the East vs West format. Instead of pitting the coasts/conferences against one another, the new framework will find elected team captains selecting their team regardless of conference, basically transforming the annual defense-less display into a high-profile pick-up game. The voting process will remain, with two players garnering the most votes being appointed to captains of their respective teams. From there, they’ll pick from the others voted into the game and play for a charity picked ahead of the game.

The transition has been long overdue, as the game has been increasingly difficult to watch over the years. The teams combined for an obscene (and record-setting) 374 total points in this year’s game. The 2018 All-Star Game will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 18th.
