Last December, ESPN teased a 30 for 30 special documentary based on Michael Jordan and the Bulls’ dynasty. On Tuesday afternoon, the network finally posted its official trailer.
Unlike previous documentaries about Jordan and the Bulls, The Last Dance will feature exclusive footage from previously-unseen practices from the 1997-1998 season. The team’s camera crew followed them through practices and even recorded on the team plane.
The Last Dance will feature interviews from a dizzying amount of basketball’s biggest names. Former Bulls coach Phil Jackson will make an appearance, as well as teammates Scottie Pippen, Steve Kerr, and Dennis Rodman. Jordan’s contemporary rivals will share their perspectives. Charles Barkley, Dikembe Mutombo, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, and Gary Payton also appear in the trailer.
Additionally, ESPN invited major guests from outside the basketball world. Barack Obama, Justin Timberlake, Bob Costas, and others are also set to appear. The documentary will air on ABC/ESPN in June 2020.
Previously, 30 for 30’s Jordan Rides the Busfocused on Jordan’s short stint with the Chicago White Sox’s minor league Birmingham Barons squad. The Ron Shelton-directed documentary originally aired on August 24, 2010. The 30 for 30 series’ last multi-part effort focused on OJ Simpson’s rise to fame and his 1994 murder trial. The documentary won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature as well as two Primetime Emmy Awards.
