Conor McGregor Brawl Causes Multiple Fights on ‘UFC 223’ to Be Canceled

We’re pretty sure this wasn’t just a stunt

On Thursday afternoon, one of the wildest media days in UFC history went down in Brooklyn. The event, which was to promote UFC 223, was crashed by star fighter Conor McGregor who threw a temper tantrum after it concluded.

McGregor, who was just stripped of his UFC lightweight title, came unannounced and began throwing chairs and guardrails at a bus holding a number of fighters and staff members. According to reports, McGregor was looking for Khabib Nurmagomedov who was to fight Max Holloway for McGregor’s stripped title.

McGregor was arrested and charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief. Now there’s news on the card, which is supposed to go down at the Barclays Center on Saturday.

UFC sent out an update confirming that four fighters were out because of the mayhem McGregor cause. This includes lightweight Michael Chiesa, who sustained several cuts on the face; flyweight Ray Borg, who was deemed unfit to fight because of multiple corneal abrasions, due to glass that got into his eye; and the entire featherweight bout between Artem Lobov and Alex Caceres was called off because Lobov was involved in the incident. (Lobov is a teammate of McGregor and was with the fighter when they rushed Barclays.)

To make matters worse, the main event, between Nurmagomedov and Holloway, is off, too. Holloway was declared unfit to fight because doctors felt like he couldn’t safely make the 155-pound limit.  (Holloway took the fight on only six days notice; Nurmagomedov was originally supposed to face Tony Ferguson but he suffered a leg injury.)

Because of these developments, there will only be 10 fights on UFC 223, with the Zabit Magomedsharipov and Kyle Bochniak featherweight fight moving to the PPV card.
