J.Kelr and Kenny Keys pay tribute to “booty music” with the star-studded Corinthian Cadillac tape. Big Mon represents for K-Otix with Senses. Gabriel Teodros puts on for the Pacific Northwest with the deeply personal History Rhymes If It Doesn’t Repeat; and Dave East teams with Styles P for the formidable collaborative tape Beloved.
Ray Angry makes his debut as a leader with the arrival of One. Mark Steele is back after what feels like a minute. Cookin’ Soul serves up the latest anthology of remixes. Beat Tape Co-Op celebrates a decade in the game with the 10 Year Anniversary Compilation, FatVonFree keeps the instrumentals coming with Just Another Beat Tape Vol. 5, 30/70’s Horatio Luna drops a gang of remixes and Ol’ Burger Beats closes this week out with his Appelsap 2018 set for Boiler Room.
Big Mon – Senses
K-Otix member and Houston’s own Big Money Mic, aka Big Mon, returns from a brief hiatus with Senses. Six tracks deep, the airtight project boasts features from Society of Soul alum Big Rube and DJBIGWIZ. Kay & King Mason are in the mix on production.
J.Kelr x Kenny Keys – Corinthian Cadillac
Blended Babies representative J.Kelr teams with master beatsmith Kenny Keys on their bop-heavy ode to “booty music” entitled Corinthian Cadillac. The seven-track release boasts features from Jon B, Twista, Melo-Makes-Music, Jacquie Lee, Armani White, Chuck Inglish and more.
Corinthian Cadillac is the first project between between platinum-selling producer J.Kelr (of Blended Babies) and the elusive master beatsmith Kenny Keys. After first coming together in 2011 to produce the title track on
Asher Roth’s Pabst & Jazz project, they bring their musical chemistry to fruition with Corinthian Cadillac. The end result invites the listener to feel the vibes and the suede interior, as they take a ride in a classic Caddy through the soul of the city.
David Begun – Marvin Jay
Months removed from the release of A Sense of Blu, David Begun is back on mashup duty with the release of Marvin Jay.
Blending the lush, soulful vocals from one of the greatest singers ever in Marvin Gaye with the production from the late J Dilla to paint a picture of what it would be like for the Prince of Soul to work with Detroit’s finest. Putting together pieces of Dilla beats across a range of albums to create unique tracks to layer in some of the most famous hits from Gaye’s collection. The result is what maybe it would look like if these two musical geniuses had not been separated by time and circumstance. Enjoy!
Dave East x Styles P – Beloved
Styles P and Dave East draw inspiration from the meaning of their shared first name, David, for the title of their inaugural collaborative project Beloved. Representing for gritty New York City, the pair drops thirteen tracks of uncut for the streets. Chase N Cashe, Scram Jones and Noah Styles provide the tracks. Jadakiss, Sheek, Tish Hyman, Jazzy and Dyce Payne guest on the tape.
Gabriel Teodros – History Rhymes If It Doesn’t Repeat
Seattle’s own Gabriel Teodros explores personal trauma and the healing process on History Rhymes If It Doesn’t Repeat, produced entirely by Juno Award-winning artist and producer Moka Only. Features include Otieno Terry, Meklit, El Dia, Julie-C, Essam, Shakiah, Rell Be Free, Mikaela Romero and more.
Ray Angry – One
Pianist and composer Ray Angry follows a career as a high profile sideman and producer, including his work as a member of The Roots, with One –– his first album as a leader. The project recorded live on analog tape boasts The Vanguard’s own Kendra Foster as its lone feature. Angry’s quintet includes trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, saxophonist Myron Walden, bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Eric Harland.
Mark Steele – It’s Been A Minute
Bull City’s own Mark Steele follows the Before A Minute mixtape with his highly-anticipated third album It’s Been A Minute. Razor sharp and laser-focused after living out of his car to produce the project, Steele shines on the coming-of-age record which features appearances from No Malice and G. Yamazawa. Khrysis handles the production.
Cookin’ Soul – Remix Anthology Vol. 2 (2005- 2015)
Cookin’ Soul compiles a decade’s worth of reworks on Remix Anthology Vol. 2. The seventeen-track compilation features flips of rap heavyweights including Eazy E, Jay Z x Lil Wayne, Heavy D, The Notorious B.I.G, GangStarr, Black Moon, Camron x Vado, Blahzay Blahzay and more.
