Zack Snyder to Release "Snyder Cut" of 'Justice League' on HBO Max

Rumors about this edition of the film spread for years.

HBO's new premium streaming package HBO Max finally launches on May 27. The addition will feature content like FriendsThe Big Bang TheorySouth Park, and a 50-minute special Boondocks reboot.

On Wednesday, the network made a huge announcement. The long-rumored "Snyder Cut" of the disappointing 2017 film Justice League will be coming to HBO Max in 2021.

"I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Bros for this brave gesture of supporting artists," Snyder said in a statement. "Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality."

At the moment, Snyder and the network are working out the form of the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder is reassembling the original postproduction crew and likely bringing back the actors to record additional dialogue.

Zach Snyder was the film's original director. After a family tragedy, Snyder stepped away from the film. Subsequently, Warner Bros. gave The Avengers director Joss Whedon control of the film. Whedon altered the script, essentially reshooting the entire thing.

"It will be an entirely new thing," Snyder told THR. "Especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experienced apart from that movie," Snyder told THR he hasn't watched Whedon's version of the film.

The film reportedly lost $60 million, not even earning back its $300 million budget. In the wake of its release, fans of DC Comics formulated theories of what went wrong with the film. The most Disappointment in the movie led to the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign.

A source tells THR the new film could cost $20 million, while another says a number closer to $30 million is more likely.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa and Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot also expressed their support for the campaign. In an interview with MTV News, Momoa admitted he was "obsessed" with the idea.

"I'm obsessed with it too," he said, clearly trying to censor himself to avoid drama. "That's one thing that sucks with our business...you just can't speak your mind."

Snyder did not reveal the film's exact release date.
