By now, we’ve all seen that celeb-packed cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” the video featuring everyone from Gal Gadot and Zoe Kravitz to Will Farrell and Mark Ruffalo. In times of unifying and banding together during a crisis, “Imagine” has become a go-to anthem, its uplifting lyrics meant to encourage and uplift listeners in times of hardship.
Despite the video’s intent it faced plenty of backlash, with viewers feeling patronized by a number of rich celebrities singing to them instead of, you know, donating money to people who’ve lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 (2019 coronavirus) pandemic.
Enter — Zack Fox. Taking a cue from the failure of the “Imagine” cover, the comedian shared a video on his Instagram where he, along with Eric Andre, Thundercat, Quinta Brunson, Guapdad 4000, Chuck Inglish, Langston Kerman, Jak Knight, Sam Jay, 6lack, Teddy Ray, and TisaKorean, covered Three 6 Mafia’s “Slob On My Knob.”
“I know during all this quarantine stuff some of you might feel lonely and scared and confused, and I wanna let you know that that’s perfectly OK. I do too, we all do, it’s perfectly normal,” Fox begins the video with. “But for me there’s a song from my childhood that would always help me out when I would feel that way, and I wanna share it with y’all, and hopefully just help out a little bit. It goes a little something like this.”
From there, the group of artists and comedians offer a hilariously somber rendition of the Three 6 Mafia classic.
Moral of the story? Less serious “Imagine” covers by celebrities who seem to be blissfully unaware of their position in society, and more somber covers of southern rap classics.
