Huge win this week for Baltimore rapper Young Moose. On Wednesday, Moose – whose legal name is Kevron Evans – has been approved a $300,000 settlement from Baltimore’s Board of Estimates after filing a lawsuit against convicted former Gun Trace Task Force Detective Daniel Hersl. The notorious Gun Trace Task Force was also depicted in new HBO series We Own This City.
Last March, Evans filed a a lawsuit against the city and its police department, alleging that several Baltimore police officers, including Hersl, planted crack cocaine on him during a 2012 search. Arrested before he was able to perform at Royal Farms Arena, Evans was then incarcerated for eight years, unable to venture into further music endeavors. In 2020, Evans’ charges were dismissed when Baltimore reviewed hundreds of cases that involved the Gun Trace Task Force, citing the cases as unethical.
“In order to resolve this case, avoiding the expense, time, and uncertainties of further protracted litigation and the potential for an excess judgment, BPD and the city agreed to offer plaintiff a settlement payment of $300,000.00,” the Board of Estimates agenda said, according to Fox Baltimore.
“As with the prior GTTF settlements, we believe this settlement is in the best interest of both the city and the plaintiff who may have been harmed by the misconduct of former GTTF members,” Baltimore’s law department added.
Per The Baltimore Sun, more than $10 million dollars has been awarded in numerous settlements in relation to the task force. Hersl is currently serving an 18-year sentence in federal prison after being convicted in 2018 on racketeering charges from the task force scandal.
