Here at OKP HQ, there isn't much that can be done to a Yasiin Bey track that we haven't heard or thought of in our nerdy little water-cooler chats. But every once in awhile, a rather remarkable exception is made. Case in point: NYC's DJ Kashaka bringing the highlife vibes to a lesser-known Bey's (BKA Mos Def) classic "The Love Song" which was forged in collaboration with BK outfit Da Bush Babees, wherein he provides a melodic hook for the golden-era gem, riding over a vintage boom-bap and Rhodes combo. Only in this blend, Yasiin & Co. take flight over a chop of Ghanaian afrobeat clique Uppers International's funky guitar-driven groove, opening up the track for repeat rotations twenty years after its initial release, but with a whole new feel. You can catch the highlife vibes from Kashaka's potent new blend below. Just keep your ear to the ground for more goodies in the months ahead. And if you need some more mash-up brilliance, jump back and peep Amerigo Gazeway's Yasiin Gaye project for all of The Marvelous Marvin & Mos treats you can bear.
