‘Black Panther 2’ Will Not Recast T’Challa In Honor Of Chadwick Boseman

The Black Panther sequel will instead “explore the world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film,” according to Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

Among many of the great roles Chadwick Boseman had before his passing is August is undoubtedly his portrayal of Black Panther / T’Challa in Black Panther. So, it’s understandable that Marvel is honoring the late Boseman by not recasting the comic book character for Black Panther 2.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirmed the news Thursday during Marvel Studios’ presentation at Disney Investor Day.

“I wanted to acknowledge the devastating loss of a dear friend and member of the Marvel Studios family,” Feige said, according to Deadline. “Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally. His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past.”

“To honor the legacy that Chad helped us build through his portrayal of the king of Wakanda, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film,” he continued.

Disney also shared a tweet confirming the news.

Ryan Coogler is returning to write and direct the sequel, which is slated to be released on July 8, 2022. Previously, fans had speculated that Letitia Wright (who portrayed T’Challa’s sister Shuri) could take up the mantle as Black Panther, but that no longer seems to be the case.
