Can 'Black Panther' go all the way?

With a $700M box office record-breaking second week, and a No. 1chart-topping soundtrack, Marvel's Black Panther is breaking barriers. But fans and critics wonder, can it go the distance in next year's Academy Award season?

Every Marvel Studios movie that has been recognized by the Academy has snagged a nomination for visual effects. But does Black Panther have what it takes to enter the discussion for the illustrious Best Picture nomination?

Aside from visual effects, costume design in superhero flicks also tend to pique the interests of Academy voters more so than performances, and fans think it's the least the Academy can award Black Panther with. Director Ryan Coogler appointed the legendary Ruth E. Carter for the film's costume designs, and given her Oscar track record within the field— having been nominated for Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and Steven Spielberg’s Amistad— a nod in this category could be likely.

The 2008 The Dark Knight transcended superhero flick expectations as Heath Ledger won the supporting actor award. And last month, Logan became the first superhero movie to land a screenwriting nomination.

The Marvel Studios films that have been nominated so far include Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016), and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (2017).
