'Who Will Survive America' Examines US Gun Control Problem

Guns continue to be something easily accessible in the United States, and still nothing is being done to control the problem. From the Pulse shooting and another recent club shooting that also occurred in Florida (Fort Myer's Club Blu) to past incidents such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the 2012 Aurora shooting, the lack of gun control in the country allows tragedies like these to continue to happen.

"Who Will Survive America" addresses the country's love affair and easy accessibility to guns. Written and directed by Sheldon Candis, the short film examines the process of legally purchasing a gun by having Candis buy one himself.

"I love America. I love my country. I love where I'm from and who I am and it saddens my heart and my sensibility as a human being to feel that somehow we're losing responsibility for each other," Candis says in the film. "I think that my job as a filmmaker is not only to entertain but also to educate. And listen, I'm not saying you have to be for guns or not for guns. The intent of the film is to just say, can we all agree that maybe it shouldn't be this easy to acquire a gun in America?"

"Who Will Survive America" is a part of Sundance New Doc Club's "Take 5: Justice Own America" initiative, which is a collection of short films that tackle today's hot-button issues.

Back in June Mashable published a piece on 100 things that are harder to do than get a gun in the United States, with processes such as getting a driver's license, owning a pet and getting through security airports (among many, many other things), being more difficult than purchasing a gun. Hence the film's provocative imagery: a gun sealed in packaging that you would commonly find a piece of meat in.
