NRA Spokesperson Says Man Killed By Cop In His Own Apartment Could’ve Survived If He Was A “Law-Abiding Gun Owner”

As the Texas Ranger Division investigates the killing of a Dallas man in his own apartment by a police officer, a spokesperson for the NRA has offered a rather tone-deaf statement on the incident.

“This could have been very different if Botham Jean had been, say, he was a law-abiding gun owner and he saw somebody coming into his apartment,” Dana Loesch said on NRATV’s Relentless on Monday. “I don’t think there’s any context that the actions would have been justified. If I see somebody coming into my house and I’m not expecting them and they’re walking in like they own the place, I would — I would act to defend myself.”

Following the comment, numerous people took to Twitter to criticize Loesch.

“If Botham Jean had a gun and killed a police officer he’d be in jail held without bond and Trump would be nonstop tweeting about that immigrant who killed that poor cop,” Sarah Cooper, a comedian, tweeted.

Another user responded to Cooper’s tweet, saying:

“He wouldn’t be in jail. He be another dead Black man killed by the cops because they would’ve shot first…no questions asked. They would’ve seen cop onfloor, Black man standing over her. He’d be in jail if he were white and did not take his own life.”

Other tweets directed at Loesch’s comments can be seen below.

Recently, the cop who shot Jean, Amber Guyger, said that Jean didn’t listen to her “verbal commands” before fatally shooting him. She also said that the apartment door was left ajar and that the room was completely dark when she fired. It was only after the shooting that she turned on the lights and realized she was in the wrong apartment.
