Watch A Tribe Called Quest Honor Phife Dawg With Two SNL Performances

A Tribe Called Quest appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform cuts from their first new album in nearly two decades, and it was one of the most memorable moments of 2016.

The first song Tribe performed from We got it From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service was “We The People….,” a timely cut that speaks about the otherization of minorities in the United States. Q-Tip wore a red leather jacket, a wide-brim hat and a black tee, while Jarobi wore a black jacket over a t-shirt bearing the late, great Phife Dawg‘s name. As the two rocked the mic, Ali Shaheed Muhammad handled the turntables for the set.

After Q-Tip rapped his first verse with Jarobi as backup, the two scooted apart on opposite sides of the stage to make room for a fresh mural of Phife Dawg, who died in March from complications with diabetes. As the speakers blared Phife’s second verse, Q-Tip and Jarobi danced while affectionately placing their microphones by Phife’s face on the mural.

For ATCQ’s second performance, they rocked album opener “The Space Program,” a song that pushes for black unity to combat the issues working against them. Q-Tip and Jarobi again performed with the mural, and Consequence and Busta Rhymes joined in at the end after coming from the front row of the crowd.
