Vince Staples Talks Music, Wanting To Be 'Regular' In New Interview

Vince Staples Is Hitting The Road This Winter

Vince Staples is known for speaking his mind, often offering a sardonic realness that's no different from his music.

In a new interview with Dazed the Long Beach rapper discusses a number of subjects, with the conversation never once focusing on his forthcoming Prima Donna EP.

He instead talks about why no one grows up wanting to be a cop, saying:

"People told us that you're important if you're a rapper, which is the reason no kid wants to grow up and be a cop. The cops kill off black people, but there are no black cops because we rappers say fuck the police. Nobody wants to go to school because we say fuck school. Everybody feels like they have to be high because a rapper says, 'do this drug or that drug.' Nobody wants to become anything in the private sector because you're not important if you're not rich. So no one wants to be the mailman."

He also addresses rappers sensationalizing their surroundings to sell their music.

"I mean it's fuckin' rappers. Why would you listen to a rapper? Of course, they're gonna make it seem like it's worse," Staples explains. "And not in a bad way. There's no money in telling the truth. You can't get money in telling the truth."

There are multiple insightful opinions throughout the interview, but one that sticks out the most is when Staples is asked "What's bigger to you personally?" and he responds:

"Life. Children. Family. The fact that people are dying everyday. Music is not that fucking important to the grand scheme of everything. There is an entire ecosystem of life outside of this world. You can go to middle of the fuckin' forest where there is no music and you will see more life than you've ever seen on a Soundcloud link."

It's a statement that reflects the regular life Staples seems to want, but it's also just a refreshing take that you don't hear often from artists (let alone rappers).

You can read the rest of the interview here. Look out for Prima Donna when it drops August 26.
