In an appearance on ESPN’s Jalen & Jacoby, Verzuz creators Timbaland and Swizz Beatz talked about the hypothetical Verzuz matchups that would make their “holy grail.” In the process, Swizz mentioned a posthumous battle between Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. Check out the clip below.
“My dream one,” Swizz revealed, “is to try to figure out a way to do Pac and Biggie in a way that the people really love it.”
Timbaland replied that he’d want to see Michael Jackson and Prince go head-to-head. While it’s unlikely the two estates would be interested at this point, it could be possible down the line.
Timbaland immediately replied that he already has an idea for the battle, so they should be working out the details by now. Neither Tupac or Biggie’s estates have publicly commented on the idea. With Verzuz moving back to a virtual event due to the pandemic, there are several ways this could safely go down.
After Tupac’s death in 1997, his estate released six posthumous albums, all of which peaked in the top ten on the United States’ Billboard charts. Biggie’s estate released three posthumous albums, two of which were certified platinum by the RIAA.
Back in 2011, Forbes reported that Tupac’s had estate earned about $3.5 million in the previous year. Despite Tupac’s vast musical catalog, at this point his Makaveli brand clothing accounts for more of the estate’s income.
Given the Verzuz brand’s well-documented effect on artists’ streaming numbers, there’s a greater-than-zero chance that both parties would want to be involved. Given the amount of living collaborators between the two, the event could easily feature some guest stars along the way.
