“If They’re Not Happy Here, They Can Leave”: Trump Doubles Down On Racist Comments Against Democratic Congresswomen

Trump has been targeting Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, and has called out Omar and Ocasio-Cortez by name.

Donald Trump has continued his attacks against several Democratic congresswomen that began with a series of tweet this past weekend.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted the following in a series of tweets:

So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly …

… and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how. …

… it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!

The tweets were directed at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. Each woman is a woman of color; three of them — Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, and Pressley — are U.S.-born citizens.

Trump’s tweets were perceived as racist because he dismissed the fact that most of the women he targeted are U.S.-born citizens, using the racist go-back-to-your-country trope to undermine them.

Now, Trump has doubled down on his remarks.

During an event outside of the White House on Monday, Trump accused the women of “hating” the United States.

“These are people who in my opinion hate our country,” he said during the “Made In America” event, according to NBC News. “All I’m saying is, if they’re not happy here, they can leave. There will be many people who will be happy.” During the event he also called out Omar and Ocasio-Cortez by name.

He accused the former of being somebody who “hates Israel” and “hates Jews, hates Jews. It’s very simple,” and called the latter for helping stop Amazon’s plans to build a second headquarters in New York.

Since then, the four congresswomen have responded to Trump’s comments.
