Trump Compares Impeachment Process To “A Lynching”

A White House spokesperson has since defended the comment.

Donald Trump took to Twitter Tuesday morning where he compared the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry a “lynching.”

“So some day, if a Democrat becomes President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights. All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching. But we will WIN!” Trump tweeted.

Following the tweet, a White House spokesperson defended Trump’s remarks and said that he was not making a historical comparison.

“The president has used many words, all types of language, to talk about the way the media has treated him,” Hogan Gidley,  the White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary, reportedly said. He also said that Trump “wasn’t trying to compare himself to the horrific history in this country at all.”

The word “lynching” has since become a trending topic on Twitter, with users speaking out against Trump’s use of the word.

“‘Lynching’ brings back images of a terrible time in our nation’s history, and the President never should have made that comparison,” Susan Collins, a Republican Senator (Maine) tweeted.

The King Center, which honors the life of the late Martin Luther King, tweeted out facts about lynching in light of the news.

Even if impeachment happens, it is unlikely Trump would be removed from office. Republicans still have the majority in the Senate and you need majority support from the Houses and Senate to remove a president.
