Update: Toby Smith's Cause of Death Has Been Revealed

[UPDATE: The cause of Toby Smith's death has been revealed. According to TMZ, Smith had been battling an unspecified form of cancer for years, keeping former bandmates and friends in the dark on its progression. They claim Smith was surrounded by his wife and kids at the time of death.]

Funk flags are at half-mast this morning. Toby Smith, a founding member of Jamiroquai, died Tuesday evening, according to the band's fan site,Funkin.

Smith served as the group's keyboardist, producer and composer as early as their debut album,Emergency on Planet Earth, stepping away from the band in 2002 after the release ofA Funk Odyssey to be closer to his family. Following his departure, Smith set up shop inBanbury, Oxfordshire, where he built Angelic Recording Studio, going on to produce and manageBritsh pop band, The Hoosiers.

His final contribution would arrive in 2013 as a songwriter and producer on X Factor winner Matt Cardle'sPorcelainin 2013.No cause of death has been reported just yet, but Jamiroquai's original bassist, Stuart Zender, sent one up for his late friend and bandmate. Jay Kay and other members of the group have yet to speak out in the wake of Smith's death. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones. R.I.P. Toby Smith.
