Photos of the students wearing the offensive attire were shared on social media.

A school's annual spirit week celebration has been canceled after some students used one of the days to dress in offensive attire.

Memorial High School's spirit week celebration had allowed its students to wear jerseys on Tuesday, but some students had transformed the day into "Thug day," the Houston Chronicle reporting that, "At least a half-dozen students decided to don over-sized NBA jerseys with cornrows, baggy shorts and, in some cases, fake tattoos."

Images of the students wearing the offensive attire were shared on Twitter by Rachel Goodwin, reportedly a senior at Memorial High School.

"Memorial High School's "thug" day for rising senior spirit week... yes this ACTUALLY happened TODAY at an actual high school but y'all keep saying "racism isn't a problem anymore"... right alright," Goodwin wrote. The Memorial senior said she collected pictures of the students in offensive attire from their social media accounts and posted them to her own Twitter account.

Spring Branch Independent School District has since issued the following statement on the incident.

"Memorial High School has a longstanding tradition for its rising juniors to have special dress days during the week before finals to celebrate the fact that this student class will soon be seniors...On Tuesday, some rising juniors wore inappropriate dress and body/hair decorations as part of an alternative, unapproved response to the theme day. As a shared expectation about the theme was clearly violated, MHS has cancelled all remaining dress theme days for the remainder of this week."

"While the majority of rising juniors followed the approved dress theme on Tuesday, any instance of an inappropriate or offensive dress violation will not be tolerated. Students found to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and dress code will be given a consequence. MHS is focused today on preparing all students for finals and ending the school year well."

In a separate report from KHOU, administrators with the high school didn't say if any disciplinary actions have been taken against the students in the photos.
