Rejoice, good people. It appears The Roots have finally broken ground on the follow-up to 2014’s …and then you shoot your cousin LP. Taking to Instagram, Questlove previewed some of the work being done on the new album, tentatively titled End Game, with a clip of Procussions alum Stro Elliot getting busy behind the beat machine with some very funky chops of chicken-scratch guitar. Karriem Riggins has also reported his involvement with the project (see below) though little else is known of prospective collaborators.
Questo likened the production process on the forthcoming seventeenth studio album (including collaborative albums and EPs) to that of Illadelph Halflife (celebrating its 20th anniversary this year) where they’d sample their own jams and blur that analog-digital divide. No word on when we can expect the album to drop, but it seems something’s on the way and it’ll surely be worth the wait. In the meantime, you can always catch the crew on The Tonight Show or Questlove at any of his other 30 jobs.
