The 7 Top Takeaways From New York Fashion Week: Doja Cat, Telfar's Pop-Up, Latto & More

We're spotlighting designers, artists, and more that captured our attention over the past week in New York City.

New York Fashion Week is officially over. But, we’re still thinking about a few designers, rappers, and moments that graced NYC with their presence or latest designs.

There were nine days this season where a bevy of designers presented their Spring/Summer 2023 collections. Tia Adeola, Theophilio, and Sammy B are a few names that stuck out to us this season – they didn’t disappoint but rather they exceeded our expectations. Telfar also had a major moment last weekend. Since NYFW is a place where artists and rappers alike flock to get off their ‘fits it came as no surprise that Doja Cat was present, after all, she’s a style star. But, Latto also had her moment this week during multiple appearances she made at shows too.

Keep scrolling to see the biggest takeaways from this past week.

Doja Cat Experiments With a New Look

When Doja Cat shaved her head a month ago the internet was confused. During this season’s New York Fashion Week she used it as a statement maker. She used the Manhattan streets as her runway this past week, and her stylist Brett Alan Nelson nailed every single look. There are three that stick out: to the Marni Spring 2023 show her hair was painted a vibrant bright orange and she wore a stunning Marni gown with an Edna St Louis “I’d Rather Be Eating Ass” t-shirt. For the Vogue World show she wore a white Marni dress and boots, but this time her head was painted white but with experimental circles throughout. Last but certainly not least, she wore a chic Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture pinstripe suit with her hair dyed blonde at the Daily Front Row Fashion Media Awards. She won the “Breakthrough Fashion Icon” award. Brett and Doja’s creative collaboration are limitless – neither of them is afraid to push against convention and we love what they dream up.

Latto Spends Her First New York Fashion Week In Killer Looks

In recent months Latto has become somewhat of a style star thanks to Zerina Akers. At Latto’s first New York Fashion Week, Akers tested out a few high fashion looks for the Atlanta-based rapper that were biting. Akers who is known for her work with Beyoncé and also Chlöe and Halle expertly styled Latto in a sexy snow white Monot dress for Harpers Bazaar's Icons party. At New York-based designer Fe Noel's show, Latto wore the Fe Noel Sunset Dancehall Dress and it’s the first time we’ve seen her in a dress like this, it was stunning. She also stunned in an outfit entirely composed of Michael Chamberlain pieces which she wore to the Vogue World after party at The Boom Boom Room; a head-turning pink wig topped off this look. Each of these looks showcases Latto’s range if given the right tools, Akers deserves a round of applause.

Telfar’s Hosted a Brooklyn Pop-Up Shop

Though we didn’t attend, it appeared that Telfar’s takeover of Downtown Brooklyn’s Rainbow was chaotic, but also a hit. This was Telfar Clemens’ first brick-and-mortar pop-up, fans were able to choose from a myriad of colors and sizes which were available. We recently shared this news via the site. Vogue reported that over 3,500 units of the logo “Shopping Bag” were in-stock and that there was a ridiculous line to get in – apparently 1,000 people had to go home bagless. If you’d like to get your hands on the “Shopping Bag,” there’s a drop of every color and size on September 23 online.

Tia Adeola Nails It Again

Manfred Thierry Mugler the late designer was Tia Adeola’s guiding light for her latest collection. Hosted at Grand Central Terminal this season she opted for textiles in multiple variations. Models went down the runway in pieces created with textile fabrics which were a nod to Mugler. While some of Tia’s pieces could be viewed as risque, we opt to view them as sensual and for those who are confident enough to wear them. The woman’s body is a canvas for the Nigerian designer.

Edvin Thompson who won a CFDA American Emerging Designer of the Year in 2021 is still killing it. For the spring 2023 season of his line Thompson unleashed chic two-piece suits, a leather multi-colored mini-skirt, sleek separates, covetable swimwear, and printed pieces we’re keen to see online in the coming months. The “I heart TP” tees were also a highlight. On the collection Edvin shared the following in a press release, “My Spring/Summer 2023 collection ‘Homecoming’ is an homage to myself; going home to Kingston, Jamaica, while also celebrating my life in New Jersey, Atlanta, and New York.” He adds, “This collection is an ode to all the places I called home.”

Sammy B Hosts Her First-Ever Runway Show

Hosted in Manhattan at Live Rocket Studios Sammy B’s first runway show was injected with her Caribbean background which came in the form of the show’s music and more. A few looks featured silk separates that were new territory for the designer who is known for creating a custom neoprene look for Beyonce – she’s also known for her wearable tees and printed dresses and separates. When the latter half of the collection was presented it was clear Sammy leaned into her Jamaican culture. These pieces which were black, green and yellow offered options for those who are smitten with dresses, tops and skirts in these colors.
