Terrace Martin, a man long overdue for a proper close-up, has been teasing the new project Velvet Portraits for months now. First we heard the collaborative effort "Think Of You" which featured the talents of Kamasi Washington on sax. Then came a jazzy Tribe-inspired salute, quickly followed by the old-soul flaunt of "Push." But with the album finally hitting digital and physical stands yesterday, it's time for the full reveal.

With his third studio album, Martin wrangles a who's-who of familiar faces from his To Pimp A Butterfly sessions, including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Lalah Hathaway, as well as newer voices like Tiffany Gouche and RoseGold. Which is to say that, Velvet Portraits, like all of Martin's pieces, comes by way of committee and should captivate those newly tuned-in to the musical marvel that is Terrace Martin and all of you A-1s-since-Day-1s with equal force.
