Yesterday, protesters in Durham, North Carolina pulled down a Confederate monument outside of a courthouse.

On Tuesday, the woman who pulled down the statue turned herself in: her name is Takiyah Thompson, and she is a 22-year-old college student at N.C. Central University.

She was charged with disorderly conduct by injury to a statue, damage to real property, participation in a riot with property damage in excess of $1,500 — which is a Class H felony — and inciting others to riot where there is property damage in excess of $1,500, which is a Class F felony.

Before Takiyah Thompson was taken into custody, she held a press conference explaining her reasoning:

“The people decided to take matters into our own hands and remove the statue. We are tired of waiting on politicians who could have voted to remove the white supremacist statues years ago, but they failed to act. So we acted.”

Thompson turned herself after footage showing her taking down the statue hit the Internet. Officials reportedly aren't done; they are still looking through footage. “The Sheriff’s Office is executing search warrants and additional arrests are expected,” according to a press release.

After news came out about Thompson, numerous of people showered the college student with love. This included Solange, who deleted her Twitter, but not before leaving one last message:

Thompson was given a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
