First Look Friday: How Starchild Went From Rapper To

Starchild & The New Romantic Smooth Out Cherrelle's "Didn't Mean To Turn You On"

Riding high off the release of his label debut CRUCIAL, Starchildand his New Romantics are back at it like Daniel with the release of a non-album cover of Cherrelle's "Didn't Mean To Turn You On." Those familiar with the original seven-minute battering of slick synth work and drum-machine-funk (helmed by the gawds, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis) will notice a distinctly altered mood in Starchild's approach. Where Cherrelle's '84 chart-smasher is aggressive and unapologetic, Starchild's take smooths out the cut, cooling things off with his own template of synthesized chords, building towards an extended dance groove that jabs and jumps like an in-era cut. But that's just par the course for Starchild.

Stream Starchild & The New Romantic's take on "Didn't Mean To Turn You On" down below and revisit our First Look feature from last week to get familiar with one of the brightest beacons in modern funk and r&b. His album CRUCIAL is out now via Ghostly and can be copped digitally on iTunes or for the between-the-grooves-treatment, grab the vinyl. You can catch him supporting Petit Noir at Baby's Alright this Friday, March 25th.
