For fans, lovers and supporters of Soulection, the name Samantha Duenas is mentioned in rarefied air. The native Los Angelean better known as DJ SOSUPERSAM has had her talents behind the wheels of steel demonstrated around the globe. Her skill in spotlighting underground sounds with classic rap, future bass and R&B has endeared herself to A-list celebrities and audiophiles alike.

As a DJ, the multi-hyphenate performer has opened up for Erykah Badu and Little Dragon, and continues to tour the world with the Soulection record label and collective. Today, we’re excited to showcase a new mix that DJ SOSUPERSAM has put out for the masses to digest. To make the second mix in the SUP? series extra sweet, the celebrated vocalist shares her own original song, “Like,” which finds her opening up to write with others.

An artist in constant demand, DJ SOSUPERSAM’s SUP? 2 mix features tracks from your favorite on-the-rise acts like SPZRKT and Tory Lanez with certified heat-rocks from Jeremiah and SWV. You can read for yourself just what inspired the “143” party DJ host to drop this second installment of her popular SUP? series and then listen to the mix in full below!

I’VE MADE A ZILLION MIXES BY THIS POINT IN MY “LITTLE DJ PHASE,” BUT THIS ONE IS A PERSONAL MARK OF PROGRESS FOR ME. “LIKE” IS AN ORIGINAL SONG I WROTE WITH DANA AND ROSE, IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD OPENED MYSELF UP TO WRITING WITH OTHERS. FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS I’VE BEEN WANTING TO MAKE MY OWN MUSIC AND SING AGAIN, AND SO I WOULD WRITE — ALONE, FRUSTRATED, A NOTEBOOK FULL OF CROSSED OUT LYRICS, FULL OF SELF DOUBT. I WAS SO SCARED TO WORK WITH OTHERS MAYBE BECAUSE I DIDN’T BELIEVE IN MY OWN ABILITIES. I’VE BEEN CRIPPLED WITH THE IDEA THAT I MUST DO EVERYTHING ALONE BY MYSELF, THAT ASKING FOR HELP WAS NOT AN OPTION IF I EVER WANTED TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS GETTING NOWHERE. DANA, MY CLOSE FRIEND OF MAYBE 13 YEARS WHO I USED TO SING WITH BACK IN SCHOOL, ENCOURAGED ME TO JOIN A WRITING SESSION WITH HER AND HER WRITING PARTNER. AND, ALTHOUGH RELUCTANTLY, I DID. ENTER ROSE. BEING IN A ROOM WITH MORE CREATIVE ENERGY OPENED UP MY SENSES LIKE POPPING CLARITIN DURING ALLERGY SEASON. AFTER SHARING BEATS THAT JR JARRIS HAD SENT OVER, ROSE, DANA, AND I CRANKED OUT “LIKE” IN ABOUT 3 HOURS. IT WAS INCREDIBLY EMPOWERING AND REWARDING TO GO ON A CREATIVE JOURNEY WITH PEOPLE WHO GET YOUR VIBE. AS SOMEONE WHO CAN NEVER SEEM TO SHAKE THEIR ANXIETY, I AM ACTUALLY EXCITED FOR ONCE TO CREATE MORE. IT WAS FUN AND WE LAUGHED A LOT AND WE MADE SOMETHING AND I JUST WANT TO DO THAT ALWAYS. I DON’T MEAN TO BE DRAMATIC, IT’S ONE SONG, BUT I’M SO NEW TO THE INTOXICATING POWER OF COLLABORATION. THE SIMPLE NOTION THAT WE CAN ALL WORK TOGETHER AND MAKE EACH OTHER STRONGER.
