May is Mental Health Month. And the Hip-Hop Professional Foundation will kick off the month with “Silence the Shame” day, a campaign dedicated to addressing the shame and stigma that swirls around mental health.
“Silence the Shame” day will be on May 5th, and numerous celebrities and influencers will be involved with the campaign, from Chloe x Halle, Jeezy, Nick Cannon, Andra Day, Estelle, Ed Lover, and more.
“Silence the Shame” was started by music industry veteran Shanti Das, who has seen the effects of depression up close and personal. Not only did Das suffer from depression but so did her friends, family, and colleagues. Speaking about her experience, she says:
“My father committed suicide when I was seven months old and I held that shame over my head for years. I finally had to forgive him, talk about it and also get the help needed with my own depression. With Silence the Shame, I hope to educate, empower and normalize the conversation around mental health.”
In the lead up to May 5th, the Hip Hop Professional Foundation released a PSA featuring a number of influencers urging people who are suffering from depression to not be ashamed, but to speak up.
