"This has been a long time coming."

Ruth E. Carter just made history. The legendary designer is now the first black person to ever win Best Costume Design at the Oscars.

Carter took home the win Sunday night (Feb. 24) at the 2019 Academy Awards for a set of African-inspired costumes worn by Black Panther characters.

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we made him an African king," Carter said during her acceptance speech. She added, "It's been my life's honor to create costumes. Thank you for the Academy. Thank you for honoring African royalty, and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen."

This year, Black Panther's Hannah Beachler became the first ever black person to win an Academy Award for production design.

Before this win, only one black woman had ever won an Oscar for a non-acting role.

Carter has received Oscar nominations for her work in the 1997 classic Amistad, Spike Lee's 1992 Malcolm X, and a win for Marvel's 2018 Black Panther. Her Academy award was also the very first Oscar won by Marvel Studios.
