After one of the most successful years of his career in 2016, Royce Da 5’9″ is starting off the new year with more heat.
Last year, Royce released the stellar Trust The Shooter mixtape before dropping Layers, his first solo album to top the Billboard Rap Chart. (Layers also made Okayplayer’s Most Slept On Albums of 2016.) But along with his great original music, a pillar of his career has been his ability to get busy over others’ songs and make them his own. Less than a week into 2017, he’s back in the booth with a freestyle over Phresher’s hit “Wait A Minute,” with the same bar-heavy, irreverent rhymes his fans love him for.
Royce has several projects in the works these days: PRhyme 2 with DJ Premier, his next solo album The Book of Ryan, and an upcoming project with Black Thought called Black and Nickel. Who knows what will hit this year, but the “Wait A Minute” freestyle is a strong start.
