Organizers decided to prioritize customers' safety first.

This week, national festivals like South By Southwest and Coachella canceled or rescheduled festivities over growing coronavirus concerns. On Friday, Record Store Day became the next in line. The event's organizers took to Twitter to announce their plans to postpone festivities until late June.

"RSD is worldwide and celebrates a record store's place in their community," organizers tweeted on Friday. "As good citizens of those communities we want everyone to be safe, healthy and feel comfortable coming to the party."

The bi-annual holiday normally occurs on one Saturday in April, as well as Black Friday and November. The festivities feature deals on vinyl, bringing together fans, artists, and independent record stores. Record store owners in Baltimore, Maryland created the concept in 2007 as a counterpart to Free Comic Book Day.

Many record salesmen call Record Store Day the best thing to happen for independent radio shops. World-famous artists like Metallica, Erykah Badu, and Talib Kweli have made appearances in past events.

The concert and event planning industry is taking a major, unexpected hit amongst growing coronavirus concerns. Coachella recently rescheduled its festival to October amidst concerns over the virus. South By Southwest canceled its festivities entirely but offered registrants the opportunity to transfer registration to festivals in the next three years. On Thursday, Live Nation Entertainment announced its plans to pause all events for the months of March and April.
