This year’s line-up is one that should feed the appetites of music nerds and novices alike, with a cosmic jazz ensemble comprised Kamasi Washington, Pharoah Sanders and The Sun Ra Arkestra, an intimate chat with Spike Lee regarding how he assembles the musical component to his films, a night of Freestyle fun with genre pioneers Louie Vega and Jellybean Benitez, a record fair at the always-dope Brooklyn Flea amongst plenty of other events for you to treat your eyes and ears to, capping the whole thing off with a night of Gospel House at a church in Bed-Stuy’s Clinton Hill neighborhood. Each venue for each event has been hand-picked by the academy to accentuate and contextualize the festival’s events.
