An English university is investigating a racist incident.

Two men have been arrested after Nottingham Trent University (NTU) student Rufaro Chisango tweeted a video in which racist remarks were being shouted at her in her halls of residence Wednesday.

In the video, multiple male voices can be heard shouting, "we hate the blacks," and "fuck the blacks." A woman's voice can be heard saying, "leave her alone." Chisango appears to be capturing the incident from the other side of her room door.

The student says the incident happened in her halls of residence on Monday night. Police have now arrested two 18-year-old men in connection to the incident on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offenses. NTU has reportedly suspended the suspects pending inquiries.

"It was a big impact obviously, when it happened. It shouldn't be tolerated at all," Chisango told BBC. She continued, "It shouldn't have [taken] such a long delay when I reported something like this. I just want the appropriate action to be taken."

Chisango reported the incident to the university halls of residence reception on Tuesday, but NTU was reportedly informed on Wednesday.

She tweeted on Wednesday that she is still waiting for a response, "I have written a statement and sent it to the uni, and so have my parents and some friends... but I want to highlight how serious this is and if I had broken their table or anything they would have dealt with it straight away but not this."

The university responded to Chisango's tweets stating, "We are investigating this as a matter of urgency. We are taking this extremely seriously and do not tolerate behaviour like this."

Nottinghamshire Police said: "We treat hate crime as a priority."

"We've seen examples of incidents like the racist writing on bananas at Warwick, the Confederate flag at Manchester and now shouting through the door in Nottingham," National Union of Students officer representing students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent, Ilyas Nagdee, told BBC.

"These are just the stories that go viral over social media. But unfortunately this is the day-to-day experience of students of colour across the country and it has been going on for decades. I'm contacted at least a couple of times a week by students asking me for help after experiencing racism."
