Rachel Dolezal, a white woman who for years claimed that she was black, was charged with committing welfare. She was booked and fingerprinted and taken to the Spokane County jail in Washington State on Monday. She was eventually released.
Dolezal — who pleaded not guilty to first-degree theft by welfare fraud, a perjury charge, and making false verification — could potentially face up to 15 years in prison. Allegedly, Dolezal received thousands of dollars in public aid illegally.
Reports say that Dolezal reported her income as being under $500 per month in order to be eligible for welfare and food assistance. However, a subpoena of her records show she made around $84,000 in three years from her book In Full Color, speaking engagements and sales of products she made at home.
Dolezal reportedly received almost $9,000 between August 2015 and November 2017.
