The disgraced singer is currently in jail over multiple sex crime charges.

R. Kelly was reportedly been moved out of solitary confinement and into the general population Tuesday (Sept. 3), but prosecutors are countering claims from the singer's legal team that he was held there against his will.

According to a report in Chicago Tribune, prosecutors referenced a recorded jail phone call where Kelly supposedly explained why he refused to go into general population when the chance was offered. They found Kelly believed his fame would make him too popular among regular inmates.

"If I go to population… I’m just up on everybody and everybody’s up on me, and I’m trying to figure out how to trust that or whatever," Kelly was quoted as saying in the July 19 call.

He was arrested in Chicago on July 11 on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking.

Kelly reportedly preferred the Special Housing Unit, a section for at-risk prisoners, at the Metropolitan Correctional Center because he reportedly feared for his safety. In the call, he allegedly said, "You know, and that’s why, I was like, hmmm, too many people up on you and I done seen too many movies, you know, and it’s just, and then I’m so popular here, it’s like yeah man."

Kelly is currently being held without bail following multiple sex crime charges.
