UPDATE: You can now watch the official video, below.
Yesterday, as hundreds of New Yorkers filled the lawn of Queens’ St. Alban’s Park in celebration of the late Phife Dawg‘s life and impact in hip-hop, we learned that Beats 1 would premiere the full script of “Nutshell”; a J Dilla-produced gem that was teased in part months back. Moments ago, Beats 1 delivered on their promise, premiering “Nutshell” on Ebro’s slot in all of its glory and unleashing the full brunt of The Five-Footer’s verbal aerobics for all the world to hear. The track would have been part of the new album Give Thanks, which Phife had been working on up until his tragic passing on March 22nd.
But this is just the tip of the celebration, as it continues on today at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater with an all-star musical salute. And though we know literally nothing about who are what will take place, we were promised it would be monumental. So if you were one of those that copped a free ticket at yesterday’s memorial in St. Alban’s Park, just know that you’re in for a treat. Stream Phife Dawg and J Dilla’s heavenly hip-hop symphony below. We’ll update with the iTunes link as soon as it goes live. Proceeds from the single will be donated to various charities promoting kidney and liver health, as well as diabetes awareness.
