Pass The Popcorn: Should Will Smith Or Idris Elba Play President Obama?
Will Smith and Idris Elba are arguably two of the best actors on the planet. With box office success, the hearts of women everywhere and immense talent all at their disposal, one would be interested to learn that these Hollywood bosom buddies are competing for a role which threatens their friendship.
Yes, according to the Belfast Telegraph, Elba, 43, is President Barack Obama‘s first choice to play himself if there was ever a biopic about the 44th president of the United States. Will Smith, who has also been very vocal about his desire to play Obama, has come out in an interview with podcast The Frame to express his concerns about beating out Idris Elba for the role.
“I don’t know. He’s got to write the end of the story,” Will said during his sit down with the podcast. “He may have switched out. Idris has got that British thing. He sounds so intelligent. I’ll have to work on my Obama accent and show him I can do it better than Idris.” For those who have seen Concussion, know that Will Smith is fancying himself an accent-actor, but hopefully his Obama is much better than his Nigerian.
Later in the podcast, Big Willie Style was asked if he was “nervous” about being beaten out for the role by Idris Elba, who has also been circling the potential project. Playing Barack Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and whoever gets to portray the 44th Commander-In-Chief will have to come with it. While it is interesting to see two of Hollywood’s most bankable actors duking it out for the role of Barry O., we are sure looking forward to seeing those audition tapes once they leak on the World Wide Web.
