Pass The Popcorn: Danai Gurira To Play Afeni Shakur In "All Eyez On Me" Biopic
Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne on AMC’s The Walking Dead, is pretty handy with a weapon and already one of our most cherished stars in Hollywood. 2016 will find her doubling-down on her sharp acumen, as word has hit the web saying the actress will play Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, in the All Eyez On Me biopic.
According to Deadline, Gurira, 37, will be joining the film’s lead Demetrius Shipp, Jr. in Atlanta where the film is currently in production. Adding to the mix is Jamal Woolard, who is reprising his role as The Notorious B.I.G. in the film. The real life Afeni, who also serves as an executive producer on All Eyez On Me, exists between two strong worlds.
On one end, Afeni, a political activist and member of the Black Panthers, raised her son to be conscious of the world around him. On the other end, she descended into the annals of drug addiction, steeped in the crack era of the time. All Eyez On Me charts Tupac’s rise from unknown rapper to the popular superstar and Hollywood actor. His stint at Death Row Records, his imprisonment on rape charges and his part in the East Coast/West Coast rap war will also be featured on the big screen.
Director Benny Boom, who replaced the previous helmer Carl Franklin, is finally making way after gestating for the past few years in limbo. Producer L.T. Hutton has also snapped shots from the set, which is very fortuitous given the extremely profitable success of N.W.A.’s biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
