“Isn’t Oprah A Billionaire?”: Oprah Faces Backlash For COVID-19 Fundraiser

She will be a part of a livestream fundraiser also featuring Questlove, Common, Quincy Jones and others.

Oprah Winfrey is facing backlash on social media following reports that she will be a part of a livestream to raise money for COVID-19 relief.

On Monday, Rolling Stone reported that Oprah, along with a handful of other entertainers including Questlove, Common, Quincy Jones, will be appearing on The Call to Unite, a 24-hour livestream event that will take place this upcoming weekend. The fundraiser is organized by Tim Shriver, the longtime chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics.

“The Call to Unite will stand in solidarity with those experiencing pain, fear, loneliness, and grief — and offer hope and support as we build a new future together,” organizers stated in a press release. “Throughout the event, global leaders will join citizens of the world in sharing practices, lessons, songs, performances, reflections, and more to help us turn the pain of this moment into possibility for tomorrow.”

Oprah’s involvement in the fundraiser has since received backlash, with social media users wondering why the billionaire and American media executive is asking people for money.

Others have also highlighted the net worth of other entertainers a part of the fundraiser.

Earlier this month, Oprah donated $10 million to help food banks in the United States reach more people amid the coronavirus pandemic.
