New evidence obtained by Think Progress shows that Daniel Pantaleo, the NYPD officer who used an illegal chokehold to kill Eric Garner in 2014, had a history of breaking the rules while wearing the uniform.
Think Progress received Pantaleo’s disciplinary record, and it’s pretty stacked: it features seven disciplinary complaints and 14 individual allegations against him. Four of those allegations were substantiated by the Citizens Complaint Review Board. The CCRB recommend that Pantaleo be punished.
Allegations against Pantaleo include him refusing to get a person medical help in 2009 and an incident where he allegedly slammed a person against an inanimate object in 2011. Pantaleo was also accused of a number of abusive vehicle stops in 2012 and ’13.
It’s evident that even before that fateful day in 2014, Pantaleo was one of the more problematic police officers on the force. According to CCRB, only five percent of NYPD officers have more than seven complaints against them and two percent have more than one complaint with substantiated allegations.
Even with Pantaleo’s troubling past, the cop was barely ever punished. He received a guilty charge only once, for a stop and frisk charge, losing two vacation days in the process.
This is troubling news, considering that Pantaleo was not indicted for Eric Garner’s death, and the NYPD announced that it will not take further action until Department of Justice finishes its investigation. And Jeff Sessions is the Attorney General…so you know how that will go.
Even more troubling is that Pantaleo is still on the job, and he pulled in more than $100,000 last year.
