Ladies of Hip Hop Festival
NYC: The 12th annual Ladies of Hip Hop Festival kicks off tonight! Created in 2004 to develop and provide women and girls with positive roles that are present and represented within the hip-hop culture, the festival features four nights of panel discussions, workshops, dance competitions and showcases. In a genre that is traditionally dominated by men, this is an important festival shining light on the women in hip-hop.
Each year an elite group of female artists from around the world are selected to exhibit their work, teach and perform as part of the festival. Through education, performance and community exchanges, this annual hip-hop festival focuses on women and their relationship with those in the game we call the hip-hop industry.
The four nights of the festival include: ConversationswithHER, “a project documenting women contributing in various ways to hip-hop culture. This documentary will expand the narrow lens of which women in the culture are viewed by showing the many ways we lead, support and work within the hip-hop community.” Night Two features the Master Dance Workshops. Saturday night is Ladies Battle!, which features some of the best female street dancers from around the world competing and showcasing their talents. Dancers from Canada, Russia, Korea, Austria, France, Switzerland, Estonia, UK and Japan are expected to come perform and battle. The weekend is capped off with the annual LOHHF Performance Showcase featuring Pretty Big, GenNex, GenX, GenXS, Grounded View and more.
