Pass The Popcorn: Nina Simone + Amy Winehouse Docs Make The Oscars Shortlist

Perhaps this was a foregone conclusion, but on Wednesday official news came that both the recent Nina Simone documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? and the Amy Winehouse feature Amy were among the 15 films placed on the short list for a Best Documentary Feature Oscar award. The final list of nominees will be released on January 14th, and the award show itself goes down on February 28th, 2016.

Also on in the Best Doc shortlist are Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next, He Named Me Malala and The Look of Silence. You can check out the entire roster of documentaries below, and for good measure we suggest you take another turn with both What Happened, Miss Simone? and Amy; both are imperfect but powerful portraits of women who made an indelible mark on R&B music that carries on to this day.
