New Sun Ra Box Sets Highlight Singles Spanning From 1952 To 1991

A prolific artist, Sun Ra recorded over a thousand songs and over one hundred albums throughout his career, his steady output a testament to his musical genius. Now, a collection of 7″ Sun Ra singles are going to be released, spanning from 1952 to 1991.

In a report from The Vinyl Factory the box set of singles are rare discs from Sun Ra’s catalog and were released in small quantities, with a number of them discovered through more than one source. Some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years; others were planned but allegedly never made it to vinyl, and some appeared as one off magazine singles and posthumous releases.

Sun Ra Singles: The Definitive 45s Collection will be released as two 10×7″ vinyl box sets, each limited to 500 copies, and complete with single artwork and a 28 page booklet. If you don’t manage to get your hands on one of those 500 copies, fear not: they will also be available as two 3xLP gatefold editions. The first installment, spanning 1952 to 1961 will be released on November 25, with the second spanning 1962 to 1991, set to follow in March 2017.

Sun Ra Singles: The Definitive 45s Collection serves as the follow up to last year’s Gilles Peterson curated compilation. Check out the track list for the singles below.
