A new documentary on the legendary Sly Stone will be premiering in early January.

According to a report from The Salt Lake Tribune, the 2017 Slamdance Film Festival will be showing On the Sly: In Search of the Family Stone during the event, which goes from January 20 to 26.

A synopsis, courtesy of the festival's website, is as follows:

"Director and super fan Michael Rubenstone sets out in search of long time reclusive funk legend, Sly Stone. Along the way, he meets with some success, but finds countless more failures in trying to capture a man who refuses to be contained."

Rubenstone serves as both the director and writer of On the Sly. The movie has taken years to create (Rubenstone first started on his journey for On the Sly five years ago). A close inspection of the YouTube page that has uploaded teasers from the film, shows that all the videos have been up for over four years.

Each one features a different notable person speaking on Stone's timeless influence: Cornel West, Bobby Womack, George Johnson and Rusty Allen.

"I know he changed my life and I can't imagine my life without Sly Stone," West says in one video clip. "'Everyday People' is an integral element of every speech I give. The dignity and sanctity of everyday people...Like Douglass, like Martin King, like Louie Armstrong, like Sly Stone."

Although it is unknown if Rubenstone actually gets the opportunity to meet Stone, at the very least we know that his brother, Freddy Stone, is a part of the movie.

Next year also marks Stone's nomination for the Songwriters Hall of Fame, along with Jay Z, Babyface, Madonna and many others.

Following the Slamdance Film Festival, it is unknown if On the Sly will have a theatrical release or anything of the sort. Check out the teaser video with West below.
