Pass The Popcorn: Nelson George's 'Degentrify America' Cuts To The Core Of A Nationwide Epidemic

Across the nation, natives of virtually every major city are dealing with displacement of disturbing proportions as younger, wealthier, and typically white, new residents move in to the places and spaces once called home by a great many. The issue of gentrification is neither simple nor transparent with community building and local politics sitting at its core, but a new short form Nelson George attempts to unpack this American epidemic by speaking with activists and organizers within the communities that are directly hit by the deafening construction sites of gentrified Brooklyn, ground-zero for the cause, no doubt.

George speaks with urban planning pundit Martine August and co-founder of the Crown Heights Tenants Union Donna Mossman, both of which provide an intimate lens into this most troubling trend in American metropolitan centers. Degentrify America is Nelson George's contribution to AMC's new Take 5: Justice In America series, which is streaming in its entirety via AMC's site.
