Former Black Liberation Army member Mutulu Shakur, 72, has been released from federal prison during a 60-year sentence.

Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of the late Tupac Shakur, has been released from prison.Mutulu, 72, was released on Friday (December 16) after serving 38 years for a 1981 armor truck incident that left two Nyack cops and a security guard dead.

Although terminally ill with bone marrow cancer, Mutulu was granted release by the US Parole Commission.

“The decision to grant parole is based on federal law guidelines for ‘old law’ prisoners, finding that Dr. Shakur poses no threat to the community,” reads a statement on a website maintained by Mutulu's supporters.

The statement adds that parole officials also took Mutulu's “exemplary conduct in prison, his medical condition and how much time he has served" into consideration for his release.

“We now find your medical condition renders you so infirm of mind and body that you are no longer physically capable of committing any federal, state or local crime,” the parole commissioner wrote of Mutulu at the time.

During the 1970s and '80s, Mutulu was married to Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, who was a member of the Black Panther Party, having joined the organization in 1968. Afeni Shakur died in May 2016 following a cardiac arrest.

During the October 1981 robbery, members of the Weather Underground and The Black Liberation Army, including Mutulu, stole $1.6 million in cash from a Brink's car. During the robbery, guard Peter Paige was killed, as well as Nyack police officers Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown. A security guard named Joseph Trombino was also injured.
