OKP Premiere: Moniquea Keeps Boogie Alive On “I Don’t Wanna Get Used To It” + New ‘Yes No Maybe’ LP
Pasadena (via Gary, IN) resident Moniquea is earning her stripes as a prominent and potent foot soldier in the battle for funk’s future, hailing from one of the inarguable hubs of modern boogie the world over. We’re honored to premiere her shiny new single “I Don’t Wanna Get Used To It,” an extended cut of her glittery, G-ed out funk number that is executed to the tee. Gary, Indiana’s soul-strutting daughter comes correct, pushing her smokey and sultry vox over a finely tuned, Linn drum-fortified pocket that boasts bouncy, bubblegum bass licks and shimmering synth-work. The result is a deceptively sophisticated groove that puts the jam in Jimmy and brings the champagne to Evelyn.
The offering is our first real taste of her upcoming sophomore LP Yes No Maybe, which features production from Funkmosphere mainstays XL Middleton and Eddy Funkster, giving it the imprint of the architects of one of Cali’s most vibrant sonic scenes. The album is slated for an October 14th release via MoFunk Records, but you won’t have to wait that long to get acquainted. Stream Moniquea’s supreme boogie offering “I Don’t Wanna Get Used To It” below and be sure to check back for the next move from this brilliant ’80s revivalist.
