Mixtape Monday: Hear DJ Still Life's San Francisco Mix For #AREACODES

Tokyo, 2014 (shot on Kodak Portra 160 with a 28mm)

What does Tony Bennett, Jerry Garcia and Rappin' 4-Tay all have in common? No, they aren't the latest flavors from Ben & Jerry's, but they all are musicians who have direct ties to this week's Mixtape Monday recap of our curated DJ series, #AREACODES.

For those who haven't yet listened to our awesome-audio-filled adventure, Okayplayer links up with a mixmaster to dedicate two hours to the dope sounds of a region here in our beautiful U.S. of A. After spreading love the brotherly way for Philadelphia with DJ Matthew Law, we head west for some sun, warm weather and frothy sounds from the 415.

That's San Francisco for those who don't know.

We couldn't think of a better, more illustrious name that DJ Still Live to play the best, tangiest hits from the Left Coast. With a heavy mix of legends (E-40, The Grateful Dead, Huey Lewis), low-key rap gods (Dr. Octagon, Richie Rich, Young Cellski) and critically acclaimed hit-makers (2Pac, The Doobie Brothers, Sly & The Family Stone) — this week's Mixtape Monday recap will have you moving and grooving before the afternoon rush hour kicks in.

"I grew up in Mountain View," DJ Still Life told us when we asked him to speak on some of the tracks he played during #AREACODES episode deux. "It was still part of the 415 when I grew up. I had Huey Lewis' album 'Sports' on cassette in grade school, and all the little neighborhood kids thought he was the man. I didn't even have a concept of regional identity at the time as far as local musicians go, but Huey Lewis rep'd pretty hard for the Bay."

As we dig deeper into our rolodex, we invite you (and all those in-or-around the 212) to come dance, groove, play with the new Samsung S7 and hear this week's performer—DJ Nadus—at 837 Washington Street in the hustling and bustling Meatpacking District. While you step through the virtual reality tunnel by Black Egg and Kenzo Digital, you can wild out to the sounds of this week's coming episode which features the sounds of Dirty Jerz (that's New Jersey for you slowpokes—tracklist below and tape above).
