Michelle Obama made a special surprise appearance at the 61st Grammy Awards tonight (Feb. 10) in Los Angeles.
The former First Lady appeared alongside host Alicia Keys, who brought out a lineup of powerful women to stand beside her, including Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lope, and Lady Gaga.
During her time on stage, Obama talked a bit about the power of music within the context of her own life and ours.
“Music helps us share ourselves … It allows us to hear one another,” she said.
She continued,
“From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side, to the ‘who run the world’ songs that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story. And I know that’s true for everybody here… Whether we like country, or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves — our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys,” the former first lady continued. “It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in.” “Music shows us that all of it matters, every story within every voice, every note within every song.”
