According to The Hollywood Reporter, the untitled documentary "promises a personal look at Blige's music and TV industry ascent amid past struggles with poverty, abuse, addiction and heartbreak." Blige and Puff Daddy will serve as executive producers of the documentary while Vanessa Roth will serve as the director. The film is being made for Amazon Prime Video.

"We all know Mary J. Blige as the two-time Oscar nominee, Grammy Award winning, multi-hyphenate who has sold over 80 million records. But through this documentary, audiences will see a raw and honest side of Mary J. Blige opening up about her personal journey of redemption and healing," Matt Newman, co-head of movies at Amazon Studios, said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Blige received BET's 2019 Lifetime Achievement honor. The award was presented by Rihanna, who paid tribute to the '90s r&b icon with some words of reverence.

"You have set the bar for relatable, timeless, classic music. You opened multiple doors for female artists in this industry, and on behalf of all the women that came after you, like myself, thank you for being you, so we can feel comfortable being ourselves," Rihanna said.

Following the honoring, Blige was joined by Lil Kim and Method Man for a performance that featured a medley of classics from her catalog, including “No More Drama,” “All I Really Want,” “Love No Limit,” “I Can Love You,” “You’re All I Need,” and more, throwing her hallmark kicks and swapping outfits for each respective era.
